In Spring 2019 I taught Children's Book Publishing for Portland State University's Masters in Publishing program. My syllabus covers almost the entire gamut of books for children (focusing on kids ages 0 to 12), from board books to chapter books to graphic novels, from Trade books to those geared toward the education and library market. And we cover editorial, marketing, sales, even production and legal issues.
In 2017 I talked to the League of Exceptional Writers about audiobooks. I had a great group of engaged kids who had thoughtful questions about what goes into selecting content and producing audiobooks, and a couple who even tried their hand at narrating books. We might have some future narrators in our midst! Thanks to Rosanne, Oregon SCBWI, and Powell's for hosting me. For future talks, visit the SCBWI website.
